I just finished taking 10 weeks of flower design class and I learned more in this book than I did for the entire class. Well written, beautiful pictures and easy to follow directions. Highly recommend!
Carly Cylinder shared the secret sauce to floral design! You can be her sous chef! I recently started a studio floral business for small weddings and events called Flori in the Seattle area. I had worked for a couple of florists years ago, but I needed a refresh. The way I learn is by reading. I have way too many floral design and gardening books already but wanted something updated and to learn what was happening in the floral industry. After searching online, I found The Flower Chef and ordered it because I was intrigued by the recipe format. I wanted to be inspired and I wanted a reference guide. I didn't need a coffee table art/flower book. Carly Cylinder's book fit the bill because it is both visually beautiful and packed full of great information that I can access easily. I love books and love to read but I have a busy life and not a lot of time. I even like the size of the book because it is just the right size. I made one arrangement this week as a donation for a breast cancer gala but before I decided what I wanted to do, I was flipping through the The Flower Chef for some inspiration. Hollywood Glam on page 199 was perfect because of the feather boa that is incorporated. I switched it up a bit with a pink palette instead of white as a nod to The Pink Boat Regatta theme of the event and used a pink-hued hydrangea from my garden and added some waterlily dahlias too. I am not the best iPhone photographer of florals but you can see my arrangement attached here that I modeled after the Hollywood Glam. Other recipes I am excited to try are Graffiti Leaves and the Garland Flowers that incorporates wood flowers! I think Carly has done a great service to flower lovers because whether you are a novice or experienced, she demystifies the art of floral design with concrete steps including stem length, type of container, how to prep/condition flowers etc. I love it for inspiration and information! The recipes run the gamut of sophisticated and modern to fun and funky to sweet and English Garden style. Thanks for sharing the secret sauce! This is an easy to read, highly informative book on floral design. I've been a professional florist for a while and learned some new tips and tricks from it. Thie Flower Chef will be very useful to anyone interested in arranging flowers. It's written in a way that's not intimidating to the novice, so if you just want to learn to how to make prettier arrangements for the home, this is a great book for you as well. I have several books written by top designers in the industry, and found this to be the most comprehensive so far. I highly recommend it.
I own several flower books, but this is the first that explains how to make arrangements step by step, including exactly what supplies you need for each. The designs are beautiful and simple enough for a beginner to learn. Well written and beautiful to look at.
I adore this book! Most of my floral arrangement knowledge comes from online videos and books I checked out from the library. This is one of the few books I had to buy, and still reference for techniques and inspiration. Beautiful pictures and easy to read instructions. Thank you Carly for this wonderful book. Purchased this book on all the positive reviews but was very disappointed. If your looking to make generic floral arrangements you can purchase at your local grocery store then this is the book for you. I was looking for a book the had enviromenyaly frinedly techniques (no floral foam) and more of an organic and natraul movement look to arrangements and this book was not it.
What a joyful and fun book! Her personality and enthusiasm clearly shine through the beautiful pictures and inspire you to pick up those clippers. Wonderful for those in the trade and the DIYer - her designs are unique and thoughtful. Such a great approach to breaking down the arrangements - clear, concise, and varied. She really takes you from romantic, glamorous, modern and then back to simple and sweet. A truly fun book to pick up time and again!
