Superb. This is what the very best publications in architectural history look like.The building sample here is surprisingly rich for such a small geographic area. The Federal style, executed in grey stone, dominates here. In fact, I was amazed to see how conservative the stylistic developments were in this part of the country.The quality of the book, like the buildings it describes, is very high. The chapters are arranged by town and rural district, and the most excellent examples of the stone-built Federal style are included. Color photography is also of high artistic quality, and the essays which frame each entry are written by insightful experts in the field. The photography is comprehensive, so related hand-drawn architectural plans, elevations, and details are few.This is a book not only for people who love old houses, but is also for architects, historians, restorationists and craftsmen with an interest in this style and location. The book is handsomely printed and bound with the highest quality book-making materials by Syracuse University.
My brother is Brian Gorman, one of the editors, and the house on the cover is the house we lived in for part of our childhood. Therefore I am a biased critic! I think it is very well done and I know the work that went into it.
Great book, well worth it for the photos and the history of the houses featured. Now I drive by other stone houses that weren't in the book and wonder about their history, too! (This book is local to me.)
I love the book for the Jefferson County history, architecture and photography . It has given me clues to find more information about the daily life of my elusive ancestors. There is quite a lot of information here and it would make a great gift!
This is a superbly crafted, historically fascinating, lovely coffee table book, that admittedly will have a niche market; but anyone owning or loving stone houses, will love this book.
