The photo on the cover resembles a synth like my Moog Sub37 and the title of "How to Program Any Synthesizer" led me to believe this book will walk through common physical analog programming. It does not. It walks the reader through the features of one specific software synth from Caustic software. It is more an advertisement than a tutorial. Core physical synth programming, of which I expected this book to focus, does not include effects like reverb, compression, etc. While useful, these are adjunct to programming "any" synth. Much of this book covers specifically configuring effects (not synth) in the Caustic software.If you have no synth and want to spend minimal on an OK software synth, then this book may be fine for you when you download Caustic. However, if you do not want to fuss with yet another software synth, and perhaps own a physical synth, then this book is of limited value. I decided to return it to Amazon.
Great introduction to the world of synths. This explain clearly every concept in a familiar and easy way but profound enough for the novice and intermediate reader to gain a deep understanding of how to program a synthesizer!Highly recommended.
I bought and read this book primarily to see if I could recommend it to people when they ask me how they can learn to program vintage analog synths. I've been playing and programming analog synthesizers for more than thirty years.If you know nothing about how to program synthesizers, this might be a good place to start. What you'll learn here is principally subtractive synthesis; if you're hoping to learn FM synthesis (e.g. Yamaha DX7, etc) you'll need to look elsewhere.The approach in this book is to use a freely available software-based synth as the basis for the lessons. Another reviewer here was critical of this choice, because he expected to learn how to program specific models of synthesizers. By contrast, I think this was a good choice. With this approach you can learn what each of the components of a synthesizer does and get predictable results, which increases confidence and encourages further exploration. And if you're paying attention to the concepts and not just following along by dialing up the controls as instructed, you will indeed learn most of what you need to know to make music or effects with pretty much any subtractive synthesizer.The author could have put additional emphasis on how to expand beyond the specifics of each lesson. The questions and exercises at the end of each chapter offered some opportunities in this regard, but I think more examples that show variations on the patches he creates would be helpful and instructive.When I learned about these wonderful machines, the go-to resource was Devarahi's "Complete Guide to Synthesizers". It's still a good read, but it's undeniably pretty intimidating for a total newbie. And apart from an Appendix that is specific to the Arp 2600 (an awesome machine, by the way), Devarahi describes the components of synthesis in abstract form, and the reader must to translate the concepts to a real instrument for herself. This book will give you a nice head start with examples that produce predictable outcomes, and you'll then be able to get more out of resources like Devarahi's book.
