I'm about 4/5ths of the way through this book, and I just looked at it wistfully andthought, "I wish this book didn't have to end. I wish there was another one rightafter it (I've already read "Pipe Bomb For The Soul",) and then it occurred to methat my sentiments are really about the highest honor I give to books I love.If you love music, read this book. I'm just digging into this one and so far it's great. "Violence Girl" is a good addition to "American Harcore," and "We Got the Neutron Bomb." There aren't that many books on LA based punk and this one is an epic bio. "Alice" follows me to the coffee shop every day, it's just wonderful storytelling. I just caught her at Wax Trax in Denver this Summer and what a treat! She read the "barbie doll" story from this book which was really moving and funny... I would recommend this book simply because Alice Bag has a remarkable voice, there is a lot of Chicano history (socially) in her neighborhood, school, and family. Her stories are sad, moving, funny, and very interesting. It's a book for music lovers and much much more. Alice was right in the center of LA punk along with X, Weirdos, Germs, Black Randy, etc. She is a true source of inspiration. Even if one is not simply interested in punk history, this book is great personally-charged storytelling. Highly recommended. Violence Girl: East L.A. Rage to Hollywood Stage, a Chicana Punk Story
If anybody is interested in the spirit of punk culture at its inception and most exciting phase, don't pass on this book. The first time I heard The Bags I was blown away and I have loved this woman's spirit and insight ever since (not to take anything away from the rest of the band). Just a huge soul. The writing here is conversational and journal - like; don't expect a slick, professionally edited memoir. But why would you want that from one of the original queens of what people now call "D.I.Y.?" This book is exactly as it should be. As a punkera, a Latina, an L.A. legend and more importantly as just an all around smart and original person, Ms Bag provides an amazing example of how to live in this crazy modern world with dignity and inspiration, regardless of your background or taste in music! I love how she talks about spirituality and the evolution of her early rebel ideals into a mature, compassionate vision of making a difference in the real world. Thank you.
Being a fan of the late seventies west coast punk scene, I ordered this book based on the author's history in the Bags, a band I had only heard of in relation to other bands of the time. I have to admit that I expected this book to be similar to other punk tomes I have read: either a sloppily written oral history or a breathless tell-all about the crazy punk days. What I got was so much more. Violence Girl is a universal coming of age story of a bright young artist who is struggling to come to terms with her identity as a daughter, a woman, a chicana...and how she finds her voice and sense of purpose through her incredible experiences. I was blown away. Certain scenes made me catch my breath with their ferocity and then I would turn the page and find such heartbreaking tenderness and forgiveness that I was moved to tears. NOT your average rock and roll fairytale, Violence Girl has many lessons to teach. In fact, I turned around and ordered books for my entire high school advanced reading class. Get this book, share it with a young person. It will inspire you.
In a very small pool of Chicana memoirs, Alice Bag's tale comes right at us with Jaws-like candor. The author, a product of popular culture, not only demonstrates her transition into such, but also details the highs and lows of being within the birthing of a musical movement. Entertaining, at times humbling, and contemporary in its voice, Violence Girl gives us a glimpse of growing up as a first generation Mexican-American woman amongst the background of a city littered with farces and fallen angels. Alice Bag speaks truths of her generation, whether we want to hear them or not.

I grew up in LA during the Great Punk Rock Era and used to see the Bags and Castration Squad. I have always wished there were more books about this vital music scene that was such a big part of our lives. It was such a unqiue time and place, and Alice does a great job of bringing it to life. And yes she was an amazing singer at a time when there were not alot of women in bands.
I just got the book last week and I couldn't put it down... It's an amazing memoir from one of punk rock's first ladies. Alice's first hand accounts of her memories are heart-warming, frightening, familiar (myself being first generation Mexican-American as well), eye-opening, and inspiring all at the same time. It was fantastic getting her first-hand account of how the punk rock scene in Los Angeles first blossomed and reading all about Alice's early influences...but the best if the way Alice tells and conjures up memories of her life as a little girl and all that happened to her and around her that influenced her stage presence and art. To me, Alice is truly a visionary artist and this book illustrates just how much of an influence she has become to so many. It's truly inspiring and fascinating to read about her life "after" punk rock in her journey through college to her position as a school teacher. A truly great memoir that I can guarantee you won't be able to put the book down either... Felicidades, Alicia!
