This work unfortunately displays the author's lack of understanding of existing gun laws.There is no such thing as 'unlicensed dealer.' Any person or entity that engages in the business of selling gun or routinely sells guns for profit must be licensed by the federal government. Any 'unlicensed dealer' is simply a criminal black marketeer. Individuals may sell, buy or trade a firearm occasionally, but not as a business endeavor or routine practice. No unlicensed person can lawfully acquire a firearm with the intent to resell. No private party may sell any firearm to any person not a resident of their state. Private trades across state lines are illegal. It is a violation of federal law for a resident of Illinois to acquire a firearm in an unlicensed transaction in another state. It is a violation of federal law for any person to acquire a handgun outside their state of residency - not even from a federally licensed dealer. It is a violation of federal law to knowingly sell, give, lend, or otherwise transfer any firearm to any individual who is prohibited from owning a gun (felons, fugitives, nonresidents, domestic abusers, mentally defective, drug users, etc.)Even the blurb for the book is off-base by stating guns were "bought legally" in Indiana by a Chicago resident. Any such private transactions are unlawful interstate smuggling. Further, no Illinois resident may acquire any firearm, from anywhere, from any entity without first obtaining a Firearms Owner permit (FOID).Criminals and gang members engage in illegal black market activities involving guns, drugs, and even human trafficking. All of these activities are unlawful according to numerous state and federal laws. The vast majority of gun violence is directly associated with gang/drug activity.Poorly-researched and uninformed. Show a complete lack of understanding of gun control laws, criminal activity that exists outside the law, and the black market outside of governmental regulations.
I learned a lot about gun trafficking, the laws trying to regulate it and about Chicago and its subculture. But the main plot itself seemed a little too fragmented to me. The story contains a lot of depressing statistics and an insight into gangs’ psychology but author does not offer any new ideas for solving the problems, just an avalanche of depressing facts. It sure makes you think twice before visiting Chicago.I enjoyed audio version; the nice narrator voice and the right for me speed of reading. I also liked “listening while reading†option. I think it may be a great tool for teaching/improving language skills of adults and children (except this particular story is definitely targeted at the adult audience).PS. I read about things that the rest of America doesn't know or understand. Very insightful book about growing up "on the wrong side of the tracks", as we used to say. The criminal justice system in America is in desperate need of reform.
It makes one think about life in a different way. Well written, but make cause you to think why did I not know stuff like this.
This story is about gangs, guns, ruined lives, prison, and Chicago. Chicago seems to be a scary place if you’re African-American.
The author just scratches the surface. A deeper dig was needed to unravel this story. Criminals thrive, law abiding businesses really thrive.
