Oil painting is my hobby and I'm self-taught. Therefore, I have purchased many instructional books over the years. My favorite subjects are the sea and mountains, but the ocean is daunting. Mr. Lang's book has helped tremendously---it's not terribly complicated. Additionally, he doesn't use a lot of expensive supplies. I found this book to be just what I was looking for and would recommend it to anyone wanting to paint the sea in oils.
A good tutorial for the beginning seascape painter. For more advanced (and more demanding) stuff, try the books of John Robinson.

Could not put this book down. Beautiful, beautiful pictures and outstanding step by step instructions. No book that I have previously read has gone into so much detail in telling the reader how to complete the pictures. Now, if I can just get up the nerve to try to paint them. Excellent book by and excellent artisit.

Purchased the book thinking it would be a good overview. The reviews seemed promising. I've read it like three times now! It is so good and the techniques are really straightforward. I'm about to paint my very first seascape having learned from this book that it IS possible. I understand that there is also a Roy Lang DVD that goes along with this book and am looking to get a copy. If you want to learn how to paint the sea - you can't go wrong with this book.
Good explanations and demonstrations. Shows the anatomy of waves and how to make the spray. For the size of the bookthis is good value.
