When I hear a biography about a man like Dusty Rhodes I think it should be a must-read for any fan, but this one was really disappointing and hard to read. The writer, Howard Brody, did not do a particularly good job, the stories ramble and flip from one subject to another with with a very uneven flow . On more than one occasion I'd read a line, go to the next, and find myself thinking "Wait, did I just accidentally skip a line?", and not nearly enough of the book focuses on his in-ring career, A man like "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, you could write a novel worthy of Ulysses in size and still not cover everything, done right it would keep the fans attention from cover to cover. This one did not do that.
Dusty is a very interesting character whether he's in front of camera or a keyboard. I found him very honest and confident. All successful people have that confidence, that can be construed as arrogant. Read any wrestlers biography and you will see the same confidence. Dusty has seen just about everything in the business and he shares those memories honestly and openly. He's not Dan Brown, but he never said he was. He's the American Dream and as that he's great.
It's an ok book, I suppose. But it's more like a collection of stories/anecdotes than a true biography. Dust played it close to the vest and kept it Kayfabe, so you still don't really feel like you know him any better or found out any new info. If you get it for s good price it's ok, but I think the definitive book on Big Dust is still to be written.
Loved this book! It's a shame "The Dream" passed. I'm glad he was able to put together his thoughts and feelings and described in detail his journey through life. I love wrestling so once he began to talk about what led him to the wrestling ring is when it really got going! All in all this is a great read for fans of wrestling and of "The American Dream"!
I only remember Dusty when he was on TBS here in the Northeast. I wasn't really that familiar with his early days in pro wrestling, but I found the book quite interesting. The road stories are pretty funny, and including his fan club was just Dusty's unique sense of humor! He is one of wrestling's unique characters and he will admit to that! His dream wrestling card was just a sample of how he does respect the people he's worked with in the past. He seems reluctant to mention Ric Flair who named him as his mentor when he started in the business. I just enjoyed the book for what it was. If the son of a plumber from Austin Texas chose a different career, the world of pro wrestling would have been a lot less colorful!
Upon stumbling across this title I had instant flashbacks to the late 70's , with Dusty's "Getting Funky like a monkey tour"... in a nutshell...Big Dust still delivers, whether it is in the ring, on the Mike, or behind the keyboard. So get the book, kick back, and enjoy the ride..."Lord have mercy!" if you will...
I wanted to like this book. But it was like listening to a conversation that half of it was going on on the other person's head. All on all it was okay. But just okay. If the price is more than a few dollars or is not worth it.
I am a Dusty Rhodes fan and I always will be. I guess I'm just not a fan of his writing style. This book just seemed to wander. There was no particular order to it. It seemed to be written in Dusty's rambling speech. There were some great stories in here and many laugh out loud moments. It just wasn't what I hoped it to be. I was hoping to hear more details about the feuds, matches, and everything that went on in his career. Most of the book seemed to be Rhodes bragging on himself. He even said he was as "great a wrestling mind" as Vince McMahon. He had a tendency to almost blame others for things that didn't work out instead of taking much responsibility on anything. I could have done without the chapter of fan letters written to him for our un-enjoyment.Still like Dusty, just disappointed with the book. Could've been SO much more.
